Fo Guang Shan Nan Tien Temple held its Baby Blessing Ceremony on 1st August, offering prayers and blessings for 37 infants from diverse cultural backgrounds. Among the participants was a family who drove two hours to attend after the mother discovered Buddhism through reading Buddhist books and listening to Dharma podcasts. More than one hundred parents, relatives, and friends gathered to witness the children receive Buddhist blessings at the beginning of their lives.

The ceremony was presided over by Venerable Jue Ning, Superintendent of Nan Tien Temple, who led the assembly in chanting the Heart Sutra and recited Venerable Master Hsing Yun's "Prayer and Wishes for Baby Blessing." The prayers invoked the Buddha's blessings for the children to grow up free from harm, enjoy good physical and mental health, and cultivate both blessings and wisdom, while developing gratitude, self-reflection, generosity, right understanding, and wholesome values.

In her Dharma address, Venerable Jue Ning reminded parents that they are their children's first teachers and role models. She encouraged them to nurture their children with compassion and wisdom, guiding them to distinguish right from wrong, respect others, share generously, and embrace responsibility with courage and confidence. She emphasised that leading by example not only helps children develop knowledge and abilities but also cultivates kindness, integrity, and inner beauty.

Following the Dharma address, Venerable Jue Ning performed the purification blessing by sprinkling blessed holy water over the infants, while the resident monastics presented each child with an auspicious bracelet and a Baby Blessing Certificate, symbolising the beginning of a life guided by Buddhist wisdom and a bright future.

Alexander and Elizabeth, who travelled two hours from Newcastle, brought their newborn daughter, Guinevere, to participate in the ceremony. Elizabeth shared that she first encountered Buddhism through reading Buddhist books and listening to Dharma podcasts. She believes that meditation and mindfulness promote peace and emotional wellbeing and hopes her daughter will grow up in a family environment filled with mindfulness, compassion, and love.

Kiera Visser and Matthew Rauner attended with their son, Mason. Kiera said she was deeply moved by watching her son attentively observe the chanting and the sound of the Dharma instruments. She prayed that, under the Buddha's blessings, Mason would grow up healthy, joyful, kind, and caring towards others. She also shared that Venerable Jue Ning's teachings had given both her and her husband a broader perspective on life and a greater sense of inner peace.

Angela and Daniel brought their newborn twins, Finn and Tiger, to receive blessings. Angela explained that attending the ceremony was not only about helping the children establish a spiritual connection, but more importantly about introducing them from an early age to the values their family treasures—caring for others, treating themselves with kindness, and showing compassion to everyone around them.

Two other families, Harry and Sukhi, also participated in the Baby Blessing Ceremony with their children. Harry said he was deeply touched by the purification ritual with blessed nectar water and pledged to raise his child to become a kind and compassionate person. Sukhi expressed the hope that their child would grow up happily in a multicultural environment while developing patience and compassion under the Buddha's blessings.
