The seventh volume of Studies on Humanistic Buddhism, titled “Studies on Humanistic Buddhism VII: Buddhist Management”, jointly published by the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism and Nan Tien Institute (Australia), has now been released. Focusing on management in various contexts—including business, education, the monastic community, and personal self-management—as well as the creation of a “Pure Land on Earth,” the volume explores the principles of management and leadership in Humanistic Buddhism, inspiring readers to apply these ideas in daily life.

In the preface, the editors emphasize that the core perspective of this volume continues Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teaching: “The way of management begins with managing the mind.” Only leaders capable of regulating their own mind can effectively guide others. This principle runs through every article in the book, forming a thematic thread that links traditional Buddhist teachings with modern management theory.

This seventh volume contains twelve papers addressing topics in applied management. They include Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teachings on Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva’s approaches to management in The Universal Gate Chapter and on youth self-management from the Sigalovada Sutta, along with papers by seven scholars—including Professor Chen Jianhuang, Director of the Humanistic Buddhism Research Centre at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The discussions progress from self to others and from individuals to groups, culminating in topics related to building a Pure Land on Earth, with Fo Guang Shan as a case study. The book begins by exploring the importance of inner cultivation in managing others, then addresses the role of Humanistic Buddhist Chan practice in emotional regulation; it further discusses how Humanistic Buddhism shapes corporate culture, examines issues of addiction from both Buddhist and Western philosophical perspectives, considers business management through concepts such as Right Livelihood and the Six Perfections, and finally explores the construction of a Pure Land on Earth.

A key feature of this series is its global, collaborative authorship. Since 2017, the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism and Nan Tien Institute have jointly published one English-language volume each year. Under the leadership of Venerable Miao Guang, Venerable Jue Wei, and chief editor Michael Murphy, nearly 30 international volunteers from Australia, the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong, and 11 countries and regions have contributed to translation and editing. The team’s efficiency and the high quality of the English translations are widely admired.

Across its seven volumes, the series has collected 89 articles, and its electronic editions are read worldwide—including in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, India, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The series has actively fostered academic exchange in Humanistic Buddhism. As its circulation grows, Western scholars in the United States, Australia, and other countries have shown increasing willingness to participate in Humanistic Buddhism academic forums and events. These exchanges have drawn greater scholarly attention to Humanistic Buddhism, opening new avenues of study and greatly contributing to the international dissemination of the Dharma.

The publication of Studies on Humanistic Buddhism carries significant meaning. It aims to bridge linguistic gaps, promote scholarly exchange between East and West, and introduce the themes and research vitality of Humanistic Buddhism to the English-speaking academic world, enabling Western scholars and researchers to better understand the historical significance and value of Humanistic Buddhism.
