On 30 November, a total of 70 participants from Buddha’s Light Scout Group visited Algester Nursing Home as part of our ongoing community service initiative. The visit, held from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, was a heartfelt and meaningful afternoon filled with music, connection, and joy for both the residents and our Scouts.
Our talented Scouts presented a variety of musical performances, including piano, violin, cello, Chinese erhu, and diabolo. A total of 45 residents came together to enjoy and participate in the music session. They were delighted by the performances and warmly welcomed the Scouts, with many smiling, clapping, and even singing along. The atmosphere was filled with festive spirit, warmth, and genuine appreciation.

In addition to the performances, our group was honoured to donate two wheelchairs and a surround toilet frame to support the daily care and mobility needs of the residents. We also presented 80 thoughtfully prepared gift bags, along with plants and beautiful handmade crafts created by our Scouts. Each item symbolised love, respect, and care for the elderly community.

A particularly touching moment came during a conversation with one of the residents, Collins. With a bright smile, he shared that “you come again every year,” and expressed how he always looks forward to our visits. His words deeply moved our Scouts and leaders, reminding us of the lasting impact these recurring acts of kindness can have. We were also informed by the therapist, Jen, that the residents had been eagerly anticipating our arrival for weeks.

This visit was a valuable learning experience for our Scouts. Cub Scout Serena reflected that interacting with the elderly residents reminded her of the importance of patience, kindness, and respect. She felt grateful to be able to bring joy and companionship to others. Adult member Michelle also shared that talking with the residents and seeing their happy faces strengthened her sense of compassion and empathy, and made her realise how meaningful it is to give time and care to others.

Ryan shared that even before the performances began, many seniors were already gathered eagerly, waiting to listen. Seeing how much the visit meant to them lifted his spirits. After performing, he received positive feedback from a resident’s relative, who said, “If you were to come to my house and play, I would have had the time of my life!” Through this experience, Ryan realised that you do not have to be exceptionally talented to bring joy to others — all it takes is courage and passion. He also reflected that small visits like these can make a big difference in the lives of those who do not often receive visitors.

Jenna described the visit as a wonderful and heartwarming experience. Greeting the elderly residents and giving them gifts made her feel how meaningful even simple acts of kindness can be. She reflected that spreading happiness and cheer is an easy way to brighten someone’s day, because kindness is free. She expressed her gratitude for being given the opportunity to be part of such a fun and meaningful experience.

Throughout the afternoon, our Scouts had the precious opportunity to practise and live out the Three Acts of Goodness — do good deeds, speak good words, and think good thoughts — by serving with sincerity, showing respect, and bringing happiness to the residents.

Visiting Algester Nursing Home as part of our Scouts’ community service experience, we hope this meaningful visit helped them develop greater kindness, compassion, and understanding towards the elderly, and a deeper appreciation of the value of care and respect for people in their later years.

We sincerely thank Algester Nursing Home for their warm hospitality and for giving our Scouts the opportunity to serve and learn. Heartfelt thanks also go to our leaders, parents, and supporters for your continued encouragement in nurturing the character and spirit of service in our young people.

Special appreciation goes to all BLIAQ members and Scouts who generously contributed towards the preparation of the gift bags, plants, handmade crafts, and donations. Your kindness, time, and dedication made this visit truly meaningful and impactful.
