On September 30, 2025, a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck northern Cebu. Since then, more than 4,000 aftershocks have shaken the region, causing widespread damage and greatly affecting the lives of residents. In response to this disaster, Chu Un Temple and the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) immediately mobilized for relief operations. Fo Guang members, together with their families, the Siddhartha Musical team, the College of Arts at Guang Ming College, and the BLIA Cebu English Chapter, all came forward to extend compassion and assistance to those in need.

The family foundation of second-generation Fo Guang member Ben Chua promptly organized a team right after the earthquake, sending the first batch of relief goods to five affected areas in northern Cebu. At the same time, Benjie, who played the role of the Buddha in the Siddhartha Musical, gathered friends the following day to donate drinking water and food to the relief station, personally helping in the distribution. He encouraged others by saying: “We go because we want to help others, not because we are the ones who need help.” In addition, even elderly villagers offered their heartfelt contributions, collecting their meager savings to donate 19 pesos, a testament to sincere compassion.

Junrey, Executive Director of the College of Arts at Guang Ming College, and his family also launched an online fundraising initiative, rallying relatives and friends to donate. With the funds collected, they were able to purchase goods and distribute them in Daanglungsod, Medellin, assisting around 80 families in the first wave of relief. A second wave of operations is currently underway to reach more communities. Junrey shared that under the guidance of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Four Givings—giving others confidence, joy, hope, and convenience—the relief work is not only about material support but also about offering spiritual strength.

Meanwhile, Gershon of BLIA Cebu English Chapter, together with 14 colleagues from his company, organized a team to distribute 300 relief packs containing food and clean water in Barangay Poblacion, Daanbantayan, bringing much-needed comfort to residents. Deeply moved by the experience, Gershon expressed: “I dedicated this merit to the Triple Gem, for it is through the teachings of the Three Jewels that I have learned to treat others with compassion and kindness.” This conviction reflects the daily practice at Fo Guang Shan and the teachings of Abbot Ven. Yong Guang, who constantly reminds everyone to put the Dharma into action—using compassion and kindness to benefit others, especially in times of hardship.

Whether through the large-scale support of foundations or the humble yet heartfelt donations of individuals, Fo Guang members embody the spirit of unity and compassion. Guided by Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Humanistic Buddhism and the compassionate teachings of Ven. Yung Guang, the Four Givings are being practiced in daily life, bringing confidence and hope to disaster-stricken communities. Amidst the trials of this calamity, Fo Guang members demonstrate courage and compassion, letting the light of Fo Guang shine upon Cebu and become a source of strength in rebuilding lives.
