Chu Un Temple News
On October 11, Chu Un Temple in Cebu specially invited nearby community residents to return to the temple for a meaningful sharing session. The event was organized by the BLIA English Subchapter and led by Supervisor Sheila together with members Gean and Gershon. The aim was to use the wisdom and practice of the Buddha’s teachings to accompany residents through post-earthquake anxiety and help them regain inner stability and strength.
The session began with residents gathering in the main shrine, where the atmosphere was warm and focused. Gean started by introducing the “Four Noble Truths” — suffering, cause of suffering, cessation, and the path — and explained their meaning in a simple and practical way. He emphasized that while suffering is inevitable, by facing it with understanding and applying the right methods, everyone can learn and grow through adversity. The residents listened attentively and nodded in agreement, creating a calm and empowering atmosphere.
Next, Gershon used the recent earthquake as an example to encourage everyone to bravely face the changes in their daily lives after the disaster. He shared, “Although the earthquake brought fear and uncertainty, Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teachings remind us that impermanence is a part of life. Through faith and mutual support, we can regain hope and courage.” He also led an open discussion on how to apply Buddhist wisdom in everyday situations, helping residents feel less alone in their recovery journey.
Finally, Sheila focused on the theme of “gratitude,” inviting everyone to share what they were thankful for despite the challenges. Some expressed gratitude to their neighbors for helping each other, some to their families for being safe, and others to the temple for opening its doors and providing spiritual support. Through this heartfelt sharing, the atmosphere grew even warmer, filled with a sense of mutual care and encouragement.
The community sharing session concluded successfully amid blessings and Dharma joy. Many residents expressed that returning to the temple after the earthquake, listening to the Dharma, and sharing mutual care gave them a renewed sense of inner peace and confidence for the future. Chu Un Temple will continue to care for the community and walk alongside them through the recovery process with Dharma, education, and charity.
