January 16, 2026
Fo Guang Shan Chu Un Temple in Cebu, together with BLIA Cebu Chapter and BLIA Cebu English Chapter, held a Winter Solstice celebration on December 21, bringing together people of different generations and backgrounds to experience Buddhist practice and Chinese cultural traditions.
The day began with a morning chanting service attended by around 30 participants, including senior devotees and young families. Volunteers then prepared a communal lunch, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
In the afternoon, youth and first-time visitors joined a hands-on DIY activity making tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) and Yangzhou-style meatballs, symbolizing reunion and harmony. Many participants, especially Filipino youth, experienced Chinese festival culture for the first time and shared joy through cooking and cultural exchange. Lantern painting activities were also enjoyed by families with young children.
The evening continued with the first full rehearsal of the musical Star and Cloud, as cast and crew prepared for upcoming performances, using art as a bridge to share Humanistic Buddhism.
Through prayers, food, art, and cultural activities, Chu Un Temple transformed the Winter Solstice into a meaningful gathering of compassion, connection, and shared hope.
